New Coke

Is Windows Vista the worst piece of crap ever?

I think Vista could turn into a marketing coup for Microsoft. Not unlike how the New Coke disaster ended up being good for Coke.

I told Amy that I might actually have to go out and buy XP for my laptop. It would kill me to give Bill Gates more money. Especially since it's Microsoft's fault that Vista is such a piece of crap.

But before I do that, I'm going to install Linux. There is a piece of software called Wine, which allows Windows programs to run on Linux. If I can get my necessary Windows programs to run under Linux and Wine, bye-bye Windows.

I got a new locally made Vista machine about 4 months ago and it had to go back for 'repair' many times for an incredible amount of trouble shooting and rebuilds. I kept getting "crash dumps" and BSD (blue screen of death) events. They sequentially replaced the following components trying to find the problem: power supply, video card, CPU, RAM, motherboard and hard drive - In other words - everything. Finally it was determined that there was an unreported incompatability between the nVidia motherboard and nVidia video card when running Vista. Amazingly, the nVida video card did not have any problems with an Intel motherboard!

With all these Vista related problems you'd think that I too would've gone back to XP but after hanging with it through all of this and now using Vista uneventfully for several months - I like it.

There are a few features that I've gotten so used to having that I now wouldn't want to be without.

Of course I'm a fairly mainstream type user with typical programs.

Scott, you didn't describe your Vista problems but I'd guess they must have to do with some of the more esoteric stuff that you do like the Nautig locator and/or web cam feed, etc. ??

Ross, it's experiences like yours that make me want to throw my Vista laptop overboard. Amy says it's my fault for buying a low end laptop. But the laptop is almost the same configuration as the desktops I bought a few years ago, and which run blazingly fast and bug free under XP.

The irritations are constant. Mostly, it's just slow. I'll click on a button and I'll wait until the computer responds. I've added usb readyboost memory. I've stripped away as many start-up programs as possible. I've removed all the bells and whistles, so the user interface pretty much looks like an XP box. But still it's like molasses.

And then there are the bugs and crashes. Every time I boot-up the screen resolution is f-d up. I can't watch streaming videos because they crash the modem. I-tunes crashes the modem. Looking at the modem wrong, crashes the modem.

The Vista user experience is just wrong. And mind you, I have a degree in computer science. I ain't some noob. Bill Gates should be embarrassed that he put out such a piece of garbage. And really, he should send me a copy of XP for free.

But anyway, I'm getting myself worked up. I need to take my medication and calm down. I'm going to post about something else, and hopefully we can move on.

Yey!
Scott, you are always cranky after Amy leaves, maybe she should stay longer :-)

Here's some fodder to change the subject. Paul and I are looking into a wireless card for our computer so we can use the internet wherever we are (and get rid of our home phone). I'm not a computer savvy person, so any advice? Our cell phones are AT&T. I guess we have to purchase some kind of a gadget and service?

Carla, Amy is thinking about spending the entire month of June on the boat. So maybe it will be a less cranky summer.

When we had the car we drove up to Port Canaveral, but the Suncruz ship wasn't there. But I guess you wouldn't have been there anyway. I'll be in Cocoa for a couple more days, but the weather is looking good for rolling out on Wednesday.

I don't know if JJ Grills will let me dock again, or if you'd be around at lunch time. But I wouldn't mind having lunch there again, if you're free.

Verizon provides my internet access. It costs me $60/month. Aside from the modem crashing, which I think is a Vista problem, I have been very satisfied. I think their coverage is the best along the ICW. I've heard good things from other cruisers. But I think in Florida, most of the providers are pretty strong. It's just when you get into some parts of NC & GA that things get sketchy.

I have their usb720 modem. I got the usb modem because it can be attached to the computer by a cable. I've heard that internal cards can have problems with electrical interference from the computer.

I've read that Verizon has a 5 GB per month limit on their data and if it's exceeded then they'll drop your download speed to the sub 200 kbps level.
Does this pose any constraint to you?

I don't think I've had an issue with that. But of course, with computers a lot of things are opaque.

Nice blog. I have pretty much decided that we want to find a used Gemini 105M for our own use down here in the TCI.

By the way, I could be wrong, but I think that what you meant is that a microphone is just a speaker in reverse, not an amplifier. Just a technicality.
