The plan is to transit the East River through NYC tomorrow. Our cruising guide advises to be at the Battery (southern tip of Manhattan) two hours after low tide. We should then be able to catch the current to ride the 15 miles or so up the river to Throgs Neck and LI Sound (but hopefully not too much current).
So the plan is to be at the Battery at 3:30pm. That should put us at Hell Gate 4:30-5:00 and Throgs Neck 6pm or so.

I wish I were going with you. I've done that trip twice and been awestruck both times. Take lots of pictures and watch the traffic.

Go to alphabetical list of current speed sites, click on Hell Gate, and under Prediction Options, ask it for a graphic plot. The curve between slack and max is pretty steep; and if these tables are accurate, you should have over a knot on the tail by the time you get there.

Looks like we'll be doing a lot of sitting around with nothing to do, so I'll check out the link. From the NWS:
Showers and thunderstorms likely, mainly after noon. Some storms could be severe, with large hail and damaging winds.
We're thinking about heading over to Atlantic Highlands today and anchoring inside the breakwater. I wish there was an anchorage somewhere between here and NYC. I'd sure like to make SOME progress today. It's a disappointment. I was looking forward to a big day today.

Oh, well. Atlantic Highlands has a couple of restaurants and a laundromat within an easy walk of the marina, if that's any consolation.
I should also mention that time and tide are not in it with the Staten Island Ferry when it comes to waiting for no man. They blow the horn and go. Heads up going by their terminal.

ON, it was a beautiful day. Wish we had gone. Thunderstorms finally rolled through Atlantic Highlands around 7pm. It may have been the most wind I've seen on the boat. I was really happy to be behind a seawall. The anchors held well in the crowded anchorage (I had the delta and a danforth down).
AH is smaller than I expected. So close to NYC, I thought there would be a thriving downtown, but half the storefronts on main street were empty.
You or Amy should post a new blog entry when you hit the NYC skyline so I can be notified to check the boat cam.
Or I could just leave it open all day.
We should be seeing the skyline for most of the afternoon, so I wouldn't worry about missing it!
If I can, I'll drop you an email when we get there.
The plan is to leave Atlantic Highlands/Sandy Hook mid morning. We've got about 20 miles to go to the Battery/southern tip of Manhattan. Winds look favorable to sail there, but we'll have the current against us.
We need to be at the Battery around 4pm to hit the tides right for the motor up the East River through Hell Gate to Throgs Neck. If we get to Manhattan early, we'll sail around and check out the sights, Statue of Liberty, etc.
We should be able to keep the webcam going all day, and we'll try to update the gps regularly. I haven't been able to get my ftp program working on Amy's computer, so we have to do it manually.
12:19 p.m. is that the Verrazano?
Yah, we should be under it soon. Amy's driving. It's slow going, we've got some current against us. But we're not in too much of a hurry. We still have 3.5 hours until we should be at the Brooklyn Bridge.

Just found a wifi site, and just saw you go under the Verrazano bridge, pretty cool. It looked like someone panned the boatcam to show the top of the bridge just before you went under it. See you really do have an audience out here in cyberspace! Good Luck on the rest of your passage. Oh yea, shows you on the right place on the gps map as well.

Woohoo, at anchor by the Throgs Neck Bridge. East River was a piece of cake. Amy says they should call NY Harbor Hell Gate. It was a lot more exciting than the East River.
Tomorrow onto Long Island Sound.
