Captain's Chair

I left Baltimore on Sunday, heading for Deltaville. As a going away present, Matt gave me a 50 gallon water tank and a twelve volt tv. Thanks Matt! I'm not sure how useful the tv will be with the conversion to digital tv, but I'm pretty excited about the tank. I'll use it either as a gas tank, if the plastic is compatible with petroleum, or as a poo tank. My present holding tank is pathetically small, and has been known to fill quickly and overflow with guests aboard. Yuck.

I just need to figure out how to get the tank into the boat. It's pretty big and won't fit through the hatches. I'll have to disassemble some of the cabin woodwork to get it through the head and into the storage locker. Meanwhile, the tank is proving useful as a captain's chair.

That's hot. (I am referring, of course, to both the picture and the mental image of a tank filled with poo.)

Isn't it warmer there? How come you're dressed the same as you were in January?

Water temp is about 40 F. Having a giant cold mass of water feet away tends to keep the air temp down. I can feel the air warm when I get near land.

Great to see you on the move (and blogging) again... although Brrrr that does look like you're feeling the cold.

So did you make it?

Maryanne,

Snow and sleet yesterday. That's a sailing first for me. Wish I was down there with you guys. Did you get the copy of the book I sent?

Grampa,

I'm trying to do as much sailing as possible, which means that while I'm generally heading south, I'm definitely straying from the rhumb line to Deltaville. I anchored a few nights on the Eastern Shore, but now I'm heading for Solomons island to meet up with Older Salty and celebrate his dad's bday.

I take it you have not lost anymore anchors or had any other mishaps on this trip? Otherwise, I'm sure you would have updated us on those kinds of travails.

But I'm still looking for the travelog!

No, I have had some equipment breakdowns. It's to be expected on the first sail of the season. But it's all old hat.

I just don't feel that inspired to blog. Maybe it's the cold. But also I've done all this stuff before. I was excited to write when I first started cruising. It was all new to me and I wanted to share it.

But anyway, a big shout out to Older Salty's family. Happy Bday to Older Salty and Oldest Salty whose bdays are this month. I really enjoyed celebrating with them and their family today.

(I also appreciated my first shower in a week, first real meal in a week, and a trip to reprovision the boat. Thanks :)

I just discovered that you've updated your Blog .. although I'm getting to the party late!

After no action for such a long time I'd quit checking. BTW, I note that Amy is giving her blog quite a vacation too!

So what's the story? Deltaville appears to be quite some distance from Baltimore. Is this a short winter cruise (to test your mettle no doubt and possibly add to the anchor mystique) or perhaps moving Split Decision to a new harbor?

Inquiring minds want to know!

I'm counting the days (26) till I'm back in the Bahamas for a week aboard a Maine Cat 30.

Ross, sorry you missed the trip. Maybe I should have dropped you an email before I left. Split Decision is now berthed in Deltaville. I'm looking forward to having it nearby this summer.

My new marina is much fancier than my old "trailer park" marina in Baltimore. It has a pool and clean bathhouse facilities. The admiral is pleased. She was excited to discover the informal lending library in the clubhouse too.

Maybe I'll do a blog post on all the repairs and renovations I have planned for Split Decision this summer. I've already started a long list. I'm looking forward to a summer of hanging out at the marina. No big trips planned, just some weekend gunkholing.

I'm looking forward to hearing about your Bahama's trip. Amy and I are going to New Orleans this week. She has a conference there. I've never been, so I'm pretty excited.
